Around 5,000 students marched through central London to protest the proposed Education cuts and increase in tuition fees. Arriving at Whitehall they were immediately kettled (contained) by police and unable to leave the area for the next 9 hours. An old police van with no treads was driven into the crowd and abandoned. The high spirits and frustration at being trapped without food, water or toilets meant that the van was demolished throughout the afternoon. A group of school girls attempted without success to warn those vandalizing the van that it was a trap meant to discredit the real and important issues they were there to highlight.
