On the day that the government voted for 3x increase in student education tuition fees, a group of 20, 000 students march through central London to Westminster where they were quickly kettled (contained) into Parliament Square by TSG riot police.
With no room to move, the fencing protecting the green was rapidly torn down by angry protesters who felt very betrayed by the lib Dems. As the day progressed, anger, high spirits and testosterone created a volatile atmosphere with overreaction from both the students and the police. Small fires were lit with burning placards, metal fences transported above the crowd, smoke bombs, fireworks, and many attempts to push through lines of baton wielding riot police who blocked all exits.
As the night closed in the windows of the Treasury were systematically smashed. For some reason there seemed no attempt to prevent this vandalism which did the student cause no good.
The day ended 45 students and a hand full police injured. There were many arrests and one youth with severe head injuries from a truncheon.
Altogether a full on, confusing and extremely violent day with my camera.
