Months of political unrest and violence followed. An unknow number of civilians were killded and more than 200,000 people fled from their homes in western Ivory Coast.
In April , Mr Gbagbo was arrested after a military raid on the presidential compound where he had based himself. He and the former first lady were put under house arrest awaiting trial,.
In May 2011, Alassane Ouattara was finally inaugurated as the president of Ivory Coast.
The Ivorian supporters of Gbagbo claim that he has been the victim of an imperialist plot and accuse President Sarkozy of France and the UN of backing the military coup in order to take control of the African state's resources.
