Despite the Home Secretary's ban on marches in Tower Hamlets, up to 1,500 members of the far right "English Defence League" (EDL) assembled near Aldgate for a "static" protest. Police officers from all over the UK were drafted in to contain the anti-Muslim demonstration which was a potential threat to the East London Mosque and the Muslim Community of East London.
Police officers managed to contain the group and prevent clashes with the UAF (Unite against Fascism) group who had assembled about ¼ mile away. After several hours of racist chanting and the throwing of bricks, bottles and fireworks at police lines they were eventually herded out of the area.
